What each service actually involves

Most people arrive at a tree company’s website already fairly sure what they want — and often the job turns out to be something else. A tree that looks like a removal is often a pruning job; a stump that looks like a grinding job turns out to sit over a utility line. Here is what each of our services covers in Dublin, so you can tell which one you are actually asking for before anyone quotes it.

Tree removal

Taking a whole tree down, in sections, without damaging what is underneath it. On an open lot that is straightforward. On a typical Dublin property — a mature oak eight feet off the house, a fence line, a patio, an irrigation head — it is rigging work: limbs are roped down rather than dropped. Trimming and pruning

The service that prevents most removals. Clearing deadwood, reducing end weight on limbs that overhang a roof or driveway, raising a canopy off a lawn, and thinning storm-vulnerable growth. Timing matters more here than in any other tree service — oaks in particular should not be pruned in spring or early summer because of oak wilt, and the dormant-season window is when most structural work belongs. Stump grinding

Grinding the remaining stump and the flare roots below grade so the ground can be filled and planted. Emergency and storm damage

Central Ohio storm seasons put trees on roofs, cars and power lines. Crane-assisted and tight-access removals

Some trees cannot be climbed — too dead to be safe, too big for the drop zone available, or boxed in between a house and a fence with no room to rig. Those come out by crane or lift, picked over the obstacle rather than lowered through it. It is a specialist call and not every company makes it; see crane-assisted removal.

Tree health and disease

Diagnosis before treatment. The two conditions we see most in Dublin are emerald ash borer in ash and oak wilt in the red oak group, and both have a window in which treatment is still worth the money and a point past which it is not. Before we quote anything: Dublin’s tree rules

This is the part almost no tree company in Dublin puts in writing, and it changes what a job costs more often than the tree itself does.

• Where the tree stands decides whether you need a permit. A tree fully on private residential property generally does not need one. A tree in a no-disturb zone, a protected tree, or a city street tree in the right-of-way does. Our Dublin tree removal permit guide has the decision flowchart.
• The tree in your tree lawn is probably not yours. The strip between the sidewalk and the curb is public right-of-way, and Dublin Forestry maintains what grows in it. See who owns that tree.
• Where a permit applies, replanting usually does too — measured in caliper inches rather than in trees, which is why one mature protected tree can mean a dozen replacements. See replacement tree requirements.
• Emergencies skip the application, not the paperwork. A tree that is an immediate danger comes down without a formal permit application, but the removal must be reported to the Planning Director within 48 hours.
