A common question Dublin homeowners ask before a removal is whether they need a permit. The good news: for most everyday residential trees, you don’t. But Dublin does protect certain trees — so it’s worth a quick check before the saw comes out.
The Short Answer
The City of Dublin does not require a tree removal permit for trees on privately owned residential property, unless the tree is located in a designated no-disturb zone. Trees in no-disturb zones, other protected trees, and city-owned street trees (in the public right-of-way) do require a permit.
When You Likely Do Need a Permit
- Trees in a no-disturb zone — protected areas often tied to a development, conservation easement, or natural-feature setback.
- Other protected trees — Dublin issues these permits only when a tree is dead/dying, diseased or pest-affected, or damaged/hazardous.
- Street / right-of-way trees — city-owned trees between the sidewalk and street are managed by the City Forester and require approval.
Emergencies
If a tree falls or becomes an immediate danger, Dublin allows removal without a formal application to prevent harm — but the person doing the cutting must report it to the Planning Director within 48 hours. For storm emergencies, our emergency tree service handles the removal and can help with that reporting.
